Safety Recommendation Text
2022-008: It is recommended that the Civil Aviation Authority develops guidance in CAP1220, Operation of Aircraft Under E Conditions, regarding the use of existing guidance on the design and positioning of controls and displays used in the operation of the aircraft.
CAA latest update
The CAA has nearly finalised its considerations with respect to these safety recommendations within the context of the project to review and update CAP1220 (Operation of Experimental Aircraft under E Conditions). This project is a collaborative joint endeavour between the CAA and the Royal Aeronautical Society General Aviation Group.
On September 19 2024, the CAA launched a public consultation on a proposed revision to CAP1220, which includes updated guidance to address the five safety recommendations associated with the G-HYZA accident. The public consultation is currently open and will close on October 17 2024.
After the consultation closes the CAA will review the comments received and, assuming there are no significant points raised, look to publish revision 3 of CAP1220 in November 2024.

2022-009: It is recommended that the Civil Aviation Authority clarify the scope of projects considered suitable to be carried out under CAP1220, Operation of Aircraft Under E Conditions, and introduce additional provisions, where necessary, to cater for the full range of project complexity envisaged.

2022-011: It is recommended that the Civil Aviation Authority requires that the individual nominated as a competent person under CAP1220, Operation of Aircraft Under E Conditions, has the knowledge, skills, experience, and capacity to manage and oversee the experimental test programme registered on the Declaration.
