The A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) enables you to fly in the Open A2 Category.

The A2 CofC is awarded by CAA-approved providers, known as Recognised Assessment Entities (RAEs).

Course format
- Self-directed practical training
- Theory test, comprising of at least 30 multiple choice questions, covering: meteorology; UAS flight performance; technical and operational mitigations for ground risk
- The theory test may be online or paper-based

Drones that weigh 250g to 500g
If you have the A2 CofC you can also fly a drone or model aircraft that weighs 250g to 500g closer to people than 50m. You still must not intentionally fly over people.
This is a transitional option available until January 2026.
