Drone and model aircraft flying is split into categories.

Everyone starts in one of the Open Categories:

  • Open A1 Category, for flying drones and model aircraft that weigh less than 250g
  • Open A3 Category, for flying drones and model aircraft that weigh less than 25kg

Both categories cover basic flying.

Make sure you've got a Flyer ID and Operator ID

You must meet the registration requirements before you fly in the Open A1 Category or Open A3 Category.

What you can do in the Open A1 and Open A3 Categories

There are rules on where you can fly, the distances you must keep from people, and what you can do in each category.

You must follow the rules to fly safely and legally.

What to do if you want to do more advanced flying

If you decide you want to do more advanced flying, you'll need to meet more requirements, such as passing more advanced qualifications and getting an authorisation from us.
