Cabin crew medical certification during EU-Exit transition and recognition periods

The UK-EU trade deal includes agreements on air transport and aviation safety, which came into effect at 23.00 GMT on 31 December 2020 when the UK ceased taking part in the EU Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and other EU institutions.

While the agreements involve some elements of continuity, they do not constitute a replication of the UK’s regulatory arrangements as part of the EASA/EU framework and many sections (including the aircrew regulation (1178/2011), of which PART.MED is a part) of the aviation and aerospace industries face changes after 31 December 2020.

UK-issued cabin crew medical reports

Cabin crew medical reports issued by a UK CAA-approved Aeromedical Examiner (AME) or Occupational Health Medical Practitioner (OHMP) will continue to be required and be maintained valid after 31 December 2020 on UK-registered aircraft.

For aircraft registered in one of the 27 EU countries, UK-issued medical reports are unlikely to be recognised.  Cabin crew should contact their airline and / or the National Aviation Authority for the country where their airline’s aircraft are registered to establish arrangements for any recognition of their medical report.

EU-issued cabin crew medical reports

Cabin crew medical reports issued prior to 1 January 2021 by an AME holding approval in an EU Member State, or an OHMP practising in an EU Member State, may remain valid until expiry.

Cabin crew medical reports issued by EU Member State AMEs or OHMPs after the 1 January 2021 will not be recognised by the UK.  Cabin crew who become unfit after this date should consult a UK-certificated AME or UK OHMP.

Position after 31 December 2022

From 1 January 2023, all cabin crew operating with a UK AOC holder will require a UK-issued cabin crew medical report as those issued by an EU Member State or organisation approved by an EU Member State will not be recognised by the UK.
